Abstract

Based on data of more than 17000 rides offered on Europe’s largest car-pooling marketplace, we estimate the effect of drivers’ name origin on the demand for the offered ride (clicks). Car-pooling is an economic and a social market where consumers make one-off, low-stake decisions. To identify which names are associated with ‘foreign’ origins, we conducted a separate online survey with over 1500 participants. We find large and significant discrimination effects for drivers with Arab, Turkish or Persian sounding names. These drivers would have to offer their rides at considerably cheaper prices compared to drivers with a typically German name in order to reach the same demand. Further analysis supports assumptions consistent with statistical discrimination theories. Our findings shed light on subtle, everyday forms of ethnic discrimination, provide pointers for policy and fuel ongoing discussions around the need for anti-discrimination efforts in an era where markets increasingly move online.
