Endogenous Constraints on Repression

Abstract:
This project extends the seminal political economy model of Acemoglu and Robinson to account for institutions that can constrain elites in their use of repression. Such institutions can change the dynamics of democratization and the consolidation of political regimes, particularly if they are not in conflict with state capacity.
